Forty Three South

This beautiful bloom, called Garden Treasure, was bred By Don Hollingsworth in the United States. It is a true hybrid of a tree peony and an herbaceous peony. Plants like this are called an Itoh hybrid (named after the breeder in Japan who first successfully made this cross), or an intersectional hybrid.

It has the wonderful clear yellow of a tree peony, but grows just like an herbaceous peony, dying down to the ground every autumn. So far there are no plants available, but in a few years time 43 South will be selling these wonderful plants.

Already plant breeders have moved on and have developed a glorious subtle lilac and a delicate bluish/pink bloom. Maybe we will see a blue peony eventually.
